Composer's Commission

Are you an adventurous composer who sees the potential in using the clarinet's unique timbre to speak to an issue close to you?  Lets talk!

For upcoming recitals I'm dreaming of the following:

I'd like to commission composers who have an interest in creating music to speak to an issue relevant to real life today to write me a 3-5 (max 10 min) creative piece which expresses your input on an 'issue'.  The concert will be "Music with a Meaning" and here are my initial ideas which are, of course, open for discussion:

For examples of the kind of thing I’m thinking of for this event, please have a look at my website:  karenluttik.com under videos; please find Sam Beebe's "How was it we were Caught?  Sam was a BU composition student and did this project with me 2 years ago.  We interviewed and recorded the stories of homeless people at a shelter, he wrote out a libretto using their words, composed clarinet lines and computer sounds to accompany the recorded bits and performed with me onstage.  It was a wonderful project.   Another exciting piece using visuals on that recital was by Jeremy van Buskirk where I had created visuals which were seen during the solo clarinet piece.  Another piece which was so inspirational for me was Vartan Aghababian's "Songs of My Fatherland" about his feelings about the Armenian genocide.

In the short term I envision the following:

·         Please pick a topic /cause which is important and inspirational to you.

·         My aspiration is to create concerts which attract a wide and varied audience; also to be performed in alternative concert venues (such as shelters, jails, nursing homes, rallies for themes....e.g. anti-gun gatherings etc...)

·         I envision to create thoughtful and reflective moments for the audience by having music interwoven with all kinds of various art forms  which could including anything we come up with like photography, art, dance, and sculpture

·         I usually take care of visuals or any non-musical accompaniment; but I am very interested in brainstorming these ideas with the composer.  I’d like to have your permission to have your piece elaborated visually.

·         Clearness of message and 'meaning' towards the audience is important.

·         I'm especially receptive to solo works (because of convenience in preparation)

·         I perform using Bb, A, basset clarinet, Eb, bass and soon, basset horn.... and enjoy working with all combinations.)

·         I’m open to instrumentation with refreshing combinations in order to widen the clarinet repertoire (acoustic guitar, voice, harp, or electric bass?) and make the music more accessible to a wide public.

·         I'm pleased to perform with computer generated sounds including clarinet music pre-corded by me on my other instruments.

·         Some extended  techniques are fine as long as it fits with the meaning of the music and the aspiration to attract a wide and varied audience

·         I can offer you $50 to $100 plus split proceeds from concert admission for the piece depending on length.

·         I could perform on any composer’s  concerts you organize.

·         I'm interested in making a professional recording (and video) of the concert for your site and mine.

 Longer term ambitions:

·         I’m hoping to resource  crowd funding to raise additional resources for these kinds of programs and commissions in the future.

·         Once this gets off the ground and we have a performing history of your piece, I hope to  program these pieces frequently.

Issues I'm especially interested in:

·         Nature - Acadia National Park - National Parks

·         Pieces that tell a Story of actual people

·         Homelessness - Poverty

·         Gun Control - Anti violence - Peace

·         The Holocaust - WWII - The Resistance

If you are interested in this idea please respond to me at kaluttik@bu.edu  and we can discuss your ideas.

Thanks very much for your time!
